Another poster asked about the 3G vs. 3Gs - it is important. I don't believe Verizon had the iPhone in the iPhone 3 era, so you probably have a SIM card and are limited to ATT. But I may be mistaken - it shouldn't cause an issue for you, though, except occasionally the darn things get slightly unseated and you get the "cannot find sim card" error. Or some such wording.
You will need a data plan to use the advanced features of the phone like internet access.
The 3's are getting a bit dated in technology - I am not sure if the latest operating systems work on them or not, but you may not want to update your operating system when prompted - it may slow your phone to a crawl because the older processors can't handle the processing power required. There may be some apps that won't run unless you update the operating system, so it is your choice.
Specifically, you will need to download the ebay and amazon apps. If you want to read UPC's you probably need an app for that. The camera in the 3 is not nearly as good as in newer phones.
At some point, you may be asked if you want to do an "upgrade". If you want to upgrade to a much better camera, you need to do it before August because a patent dispute is forcing Apple to take the 4 and 4S off the market after August.
