Yeah, I was wondering about the "wasteful", also.
The videos for the KX case are very impressive, but they did stack the deck a little, and I am dubious that they received a mil-spec certification. If you noticed the drops onto hard surfaces were on flat hard surfaces and not on the face side. The drop from the wind turbine was onto snow covered weeds and dirt, not a hard surface. Turbines are usually surrounded by packed rock, an irregular hard surface. (I'm guessing that is a RePower turbine.)
I am very impressed by the KX case even still.
If you want a battery included like Charles mentioned, then a Mophie case is the way to go. It does double the size and the weight, but I don't even notice it.

How is it "wasteful"?

I've had a separate backup battery for 3 years or more. I think I used it on one trip back 2-3 years ago. Beats using a not-very-protective case that I then have to pay attention to charging daily.
