I upgraded my iPhone4 to an iPhone5. I never had the 4S... kept my iPhone4 for about three years. I like my iPhone5 and the best feature is being able to talk to it in messages and mail etc. so I can dictate my messages and emails. I really dislike using the keyboard. The dictation is not always perfect but better than my fingers on the keyboard which never seem to hit the correct key. Just for that dictation feature I would recommend the 5. I don't know if the iPhone 4s at that feature. I want one of the for my Mac book Pro now. I don't use siri much because I usually forget it is there, but sometimes it comes in very handy. I use an Otterbox cover so the phone is still a bit bigger and heavier but I don't mind that at all. Before I got my new Otterbox I used a smaller case until I got the Otterbox and G5 was lighter and convenient but I constantly lost it overtime I put it down. At least with the Otterbox I usually have it clipped on to me and i know where it is (at least most of the time!) Anyway, I like my iPhone5. I'm glad I waited for it. [off record, My husband has an iPhone3 still (my old one) and he could care less about upgrading. I figure when his battery dies maybe we'll get an older model that costs less, although he says he would be happier with just a plain old non smart cell phone.]
The screen is a bit bigger and the graphic are better so I hear, although I'm not sure I see a great difference. I've seen bigger screens on the competition, but I myself prefer to support APPLE.
It is your decision, John, but I think I would support a move for you to get the latest model and maybe move your wife up to a iPhone 4(probably for discount) or just take the plunge and get two new iPhone 5 phones especially if you can get the discounted price. Also you can trade in your iPhone4 and maybe her iPhone 3 and get some rebate from that as well. There are a couple places, maybe more that will do that for you (not ATT store, however, far as I know.)
