Cal,
If that is an AT&T phone, I just did the activation on the new phone and it was set to go, using my old number. Then a sync added all my stuff to it the same as the prior phone. I called AT&T to see what needed to be done to ensure the sim was clean, they checked to be sure it was out of contract and I think did something on their end. I was told to do a reset and I would be good to go. At that point you can alter and data on the phone if you wish to make changes.
