[apple-iphone] Audible.app problem

I am not looking for a solution. I have resolved it by deleting the app from my 3GS. Besides these issues, I find it doesn't do the one thing that I had hoped it would do for me, download books while I am away from home. It won't do that over cellular data, claiming that the file is too large, and I have yet to find a hot spot that will either allow or complete a download.

I recently had a couple of problems with my iPhone 3GS that made me decide to remove Audible.app from my iPhone. There is a work around for some of the problems, but not all it seems. I just wanted to share with the list members what I have found.

Audible.app discharges the battery at an alarmingly fast rate, and to the point that it will shut the phone down to where I can not start it up again until I plug it in for a charge. The discharge rate is the fastest I have seen in 3 years and even in the worst possible discharge situation you can imagine.

I took it in for a Genius Bar appointment thinking I needed a battery replacement. They have a new diagnostic they are trying out, that gave a reading of 1165 mAh out of 1200, and 645 charge cycles. Very good readings for a 3 year old iPhone. The other thing the diagnosis found was that all my available RAM was tied up, and that was causing the apps to load and run very slowly, and the phone to be unresponsive or very slow to respond to touch. Audible.app was using huge amounts of RAM. The Genius suggested restarting the iPhone 1-4 times a month to free up memory. (Remember that the 3GS has half of the RAM that the current models have.)

Audible.app seems to me to be storing all the downloaded books in RAM and not in Storage. I may be wrong on this, but there is no easy way to delete all the downloaded books from the iPhone other than going through my library of about 400 Audible books to locate and delete each section of a downloaded book, one-by-one. I originally deleted the app and re-installed it remembering that if you delete an app, all associated data is deleted also.

Then I looked at the battery drain, the poorly memory & storage use, my feeing insulted by the stats and badges, that it can't seem to download a book in public, and that its only function that seems to work duplicates what is already being done by Music.app. So I deleted it from my iPhone.

I did write to Audible about the issues, and suggested to Apple to review whether or not it should be in the App Store because of its duplication of Music.app's features, battery drain, and bad RAM use. A human at Audible did write back that they will review the issues with their software team.

Again, I am not looking for a solution. The app does nothing positive for me, I just wanted to make other users aware of the problems, so that if they are having issues, they can recognize the source and make their own decisions on how to resolve it.

Denise, I CC'd you, only because your recent post reminded me to that the above. If it works for you fine. My iPhone as other issues currently that may be aggravating this issue.

I love Audible.com, I hate Audible.app. I'll might try it again in a year or so, after they make some changes to it.
