The Podcast app is just a curation and subscription interface layed on top
of the player. You don't have to install it and in fact simply by
uninstalling podcasts reappear int he music app and you can use iTunes to
manage as always. You can use Podcast app to sync with iTunes or use it
has "PC Free" for subscribing to and/or streaming podcasts - that is the
one huge benefit the streaming no storage space required on phone and lets
you stream over WiFi or Cellular data - it is the podcasts equivalent of
iTunes Match ..
