Because it is a PITA to figure out which model people are talking about when the names are all the same for a product line.

And what happens when the next model comes along or the one after that are they going to call it, the "next new iPad" and the "one following the next new iPad"? It is a heck of a lot easier to just call it the iPad 3.

Not to mention that when the next model comes out, the iPad 3 will not be the new iPad.
