I almost never turn on the 3G data, but normally leave the WiFi on. If I am in the car driving it is plugged in and charging. But if I am traveling by plane, yes it is a battery waster.
When I travel for work, it is often a 12-hour day, usually ending with a 2-hour drive into the boonies, and I usually listen to audio books for hours.
