Thanks to all who replied. I had sent successful iMessages to both recipients many times before I tried to group message them. The problem turned out to be within my iPhone.
I deleted the problem message, quit the app. No luck. Then I shut off the phone and turned it back on. Same problem. I rebooted. The problem reappeared then corrected itself a few minutes later.
I'm not sure what fixed it but I'm glad it's gone.
