Copy any photos you took on the old iphone to your computer if you wish to keep them. Then make a back up of you old phone to iTunes.

If you are using Apple Address Book, then your contacts will sync when you sync your new iPhone to iTunes.

If you use something else for your contacts, then you will have to sync with that.

I think whoever you talked to at AT&T about moving your contacts over was mistaken.
