A friend just called and he is also working on a iPhone for his wife. It is a new to them, iPhone 5. She has a new iPad which was purchased last year. It contains notes and the new phone syncs contacts and calendar but no notes.
I think Apple must have an issue with adding a new phone to an old iCloud account or something like that.
At least I now know that others are having the issue also.
