I think I found a partial answer. When the phone goes to sleep and I reawaken it with Face ID it is so quick I can start using apps quickly. If I open Face ID and wait 1-3 secs I see in the upper rt corner it cycles through lte then WiFi then the vpn connection comes up and reconnects.. If I just unlock the phone with Face ID and jump into opening an app the vpn fails to connect and gets dropped. The delay in connecting doesn't appear to happen with the iPad. So there is a quirk or bug in reconnecting on the X.

I understand. I have subscriptions to both Surfeasy and Keepsolid VPNUnlimited
and will try both once my X comes next week.
I don't really ever use them on my phone though so it will be interesting. I will get the
speedtest app and see if either one slows my speed
I mostly use a VPN at home to watch TV out of my area and things like that.

Thanks Rich. I don't want to switch. I have tried a couple of others and decided on this one because of location of the company and it's security features. Works great on my Windows 10 computers and iPad.
What is confusing is that the iPad is still connected to vpn after 5-6 days of off and on. The iPhone however drops unexpectedly frequently. Same version of the iOS. I have even tried the same location server and various other servers to see if it were just a weak connection but it still drops.
And I could tolerate it if the vpn icon were constantly visible on the X but because it is hidden I am checking every few minutes.
Ugh.

and just used them as an app? There are so many that if yor having problems with one, I would
just try another. This is the one I use on the computer, have not tried the iPhone app though.
