Otto, how durable they are is very subjective. I have seen reports of certain cables breaking for many users, but yet, I have used the same cables for many years with no problem.
The exception, for me, has been 3 foot long micro USB A. The male connectors become loose very easily, maybe days after purchase, even from normally good brands. Yet the 3 inch long ones work for years.
But then again I am still using my early 2008 MBP, although the keyboard is starting to go, and my iPhone 4S purchased in 2012.

Yes, we all know that you can use an adaptor, supplied with the phone, but how do they stand up to regular use? I've got one to try even though I don't need one, and the cable looks very thin and fragile.
