Just to add more to the issue, the ringtone he has been using, and wants to continue using, is one he has purchased through iTunes. After the update its filename did appear already, as I remembered, as the 'Ringtone' under 'Sounds.' As Pat suggested, he had already tried assigning another ringtone, testing it (it worked), and then assigning the desired one once again, which again resulted in the default ringtone playing.
