If you use iCloud to back up apps, contacts etc, there's no need for those things in iTunes. I don't know if your can still backup photos from iPhone to upfield on the Mac.

Many have said so.
On the other hand, many have been telling Apple for years to separate out of iTunes things that are not "iTunes", including Apps, Movies, Videos, TV shows, Books, …
