No, actually, I should have said update, not upgrade. I was already on 8.x. But here's another twist. Sometimes the bar in itunes will show I have 14gb free with the Other being the most dramatically reduced followed by apps and other times it is back to normal showing just over 4gb free. Haven't noticed a pattern as to when it shows one or the other. Weird. Thanks for your thoughts.

Did you do an upgrade as new? It might have deleted your texts and photo roll if you did that. Another possibility is that your 5S had a lot of space devoted to Other which had crept up over time. I have had my various phones fill up with Other taking up a lot of space until I did a full restore to free up my space.
