In general, any photos not *taken* with the iPhone that I wish to put ON the iPhone are moved there using iTunes. I import them to my Mac using either a 3rd-party USB-connected SD card reader, or (now) the SD card slot on my MBPro.

As far as I can tell, every iMac introduced since late 2009 has had an SDXC slot built in.
