Kathie,
Not really sure I understand? Do you have a backup of the stolen Macbook? If you do then what they told you was wrong, you can migrate the songs to your new Mac using Migration assistant or just simply copy over the iTunes folder. If the music was not in iTunes, you should be able to import the music into iTunes.
If you are saying you didn't have a backup but the music is on your iPhone - then there are 3rd party apps which can copy your songs over to your Mac and then import it into iTunes.
If you are saying you don't meet any of the above situations, then they are correct there is no way for Apple to know what music you had and copy them over.

My macbook was stolen last weekend and i just bought a replacement yesterday. I was told by Apple that there is no way to move my HUGE volume of songs to my new mac, that only the purchased songs from the iCloud. Does anyone out here have any suggestions?? I downloaded (legally) these songs from my CD's over the years, but have NO interest in doing that again!
Any suggestions?
