An alternative solution. ibackupviewer is a free app for OS X. After you backup your iphone using iTunes, run the app and it will examine the contents of your backup and let you extract almost anything including voice memos from your iphone.

After an hour on my own and an hour on the phone with Apple, I am coming to this esteemed group of peeps. iPhone 5S running iOS 8.02, MBP running OSX 10.9.5 and latest iTunes. Since June no voice memos have come off my phone to my computer on Backup. what is the point if you can't backup some of the most important info for some people - Voice Memos.
