Re: [apple-iphone] iPhone 5 Display - Be Careful!

For most people, a simple case is all that is needed, unless you spend a lot of time on the water. Then water resistance is a good option.

I used to work around heavy equipment, crawling all around it, and often 230 feet in the air. No case is going to protect equipment from a 230 foot drop or being run over by a Manitowoc crawler crane. When I would go out boat fishing, I would put my phone into a water-proof bag with a flotation device.

In 13 years, with or without a case, the worst I have done was to bend the extendable antenna on Motorola StarTac or scratch a case. I have dropped my iPhone 3GS and 4S, but both were in cases. I have dropped my 4S, display down, onto an aluminum landing, with extruded traction claws, with no damage. The claws were 1/8-inch or better and my Mophie Juice Pack Plus with only 1/32nd of an inch raised lip protected the display and the rest of the iPhone. It apparently landed flat and the 1/32-inch was sufficient.

I'm guessing that Bill B. dropped his on an irregular surface and something shattered the glass. A fluke accident. I'm surprised what he found when he went to Apple. I know the iPhone AppleCare became more expensive and limited within the last year or so, but I still consider it as a required option to the phone.

JBS, AppleCare may or may not be an option in your case, because of the way Apple has to deal with warranty issues in foreign countries. That is countries other than where the item was purchased. In your case, I would suggest a case that has a good lip that extends forward of the display. Griffin used to sell a case with a decent lip and a crystal-clear polystyrene display cover. I would recommend it, but they don't make the cover any more.

A word of warning to everyone, be careful with your iPhone 5 display... My
adorable out of control pup knocked my phone out of my hand / pocket and
the display shattered when it hit the road.

I took it to the Apple store thinking it would be $99 that is quoted for
all other model screen replacements (or maybe even one of the infamous "oh
you have bought a lot of stuff" complimentary fixes) but NO they do not
currently repair the glass on iPhone 5 stating that each front display and
glass is custom cut for each iPhone. My only options were to buy a
replacement phone for "cost" of $229 and/or to add Apple Care to that
purchase for $279 and would cover me for one more incident.

This raises a very good question. does anyone know of or, even better, have experience with protection accessories for the iPhone 5.

When I bought my iPhone 5, I simply bought a case that was similar to the one I had used with my iPhone 4. I really didn't give any thought to the degree of protection it gave. The main reason for using the case was to prevent scratching of the phone's case. The case also has a raised lip around the display. This helps prevent scratching of the display protector which seems to quickly result in lifting and bubbling.

I've seen "milspec" type cases advertised for huge prices which are waterproof to 6 metres and which suspend the phone in energey-absorbing buffers, but there has to be something in-between that does the job and costs something reasonable.

Apart from a case and the film screen protector, any other suggestions for protecting one of my most important possessions. As an expat. living in China, my iPhone has become indispensable for translations, directions and record-keeping.
