I upgraded my iPhone 4S to iOS 6.1 and I am not seeing any increase in battery drain or heat issues.
Julie, I'm guessing that you have either an iPhone 3GS or 4, and I see no problem up grading.
I have not upgraded my 3GS beyond iOS 6.0.1, only because I keep it only as a back up phone, with no SIM.
