If you go to Settings-Messages, there is an option to turn character count
on or off. Sounds like you have it on.

This is probably a very stupid question, but I've been wondering about this
since iPhone 1.
Its the numbers that are "2348/160".
Nearest I can tell without counting letters and spaces is that the first
number is the total characters, and the second number is the total number of
words--anyone know?
