The iPhone can send 3 different types of text messages.

If the iPhone is running the current iOS, and has been properly set up, and the destination is also an iPhone with the current iOS that has been properly set up, it can send "iMessages" -- which are NOT Short Message Service (SMS) messages, and are sent as raw data, and are not limited to 160 characters.

Or, if ALL of those criteria are not met, it can send true SMS messages, which ARE limited to no more than 160 text-only characters.

Or it can send MultiMedia Messages (MMS), including images, etc.

The numbers you refer to translate to "This SMS message has 2348 characters out of a maximum of 160 allowed per message."
