Thanks. That's something I need to look into. I do have an iCloud account, but I've never seen a use for it. Does filtering mail in iCloud limit you to using only mail sent to the icloud.com domain? I seem to remember you or someone else's saying that it doesn't, but I wasn't following that thread then.
Nevertheless, it would be convenient if iPad mail were a little less minimal. The sort-by-date-only and the delete-fifty-msgs-one-by-one are small bothers.
