Sorry for the delay getting back to y'all.
I am using the standard Messages program on iPhone. Its always been this way, since the iPhone 1.
The numbers are to the right of the message bubble in the upper right of the window, but not in the "title bar" where the battery indicator is.
And, yes, Character Count is turned on--that's the first time I believe I've seen that. OK, so that could be the 2348 part of the "2348/160". So what is the "160" part... the number of words?
I had a screen shot, but it didn't make it through to the post.
