There are normally two, maybe three, reasons to upgrade to any new Apple update.
1- Access to the newest bells and whistles. Usually eye-candy, sometimes functional.
2- Most Apple upgrades involve things that are deeply integrated with other major functions of the OS. And without them you soon find your device hamstrung, when trying to access other major functions.
3- They often address published or unpublished security issues.
There are also situations where you should definitely not be an early adopter. Like if the use of the device is critical to your operation.
Is there a need to be among the first to upgrade? Not unless is supposed to resolve a problem that many have encountered. Let the brave souls or the technically advanced be the early adopters. It is ok to wait a few days, a few weeks or until the first incremental upgrade.
Case in point, my current situation. I was just on a traveling job, where my Mac was job critical and I did not have the time or equipment with me to clone my drive. I was going to be traveling for 3-4 months, when 10.8 came out. I got laid off and am back home, looking for another job. Still not a good time to upgrade. I did just upgrade to iTunes 11, about a week after its release, but I am still on 10.7.5.
If you are going to delay upgrading, then be courteous, and study the comments on the lists and read a few tech blogs until you feel the comfortable and the "waters fine" and it is time to jump in. See if any issues pop up that might relate to you.
