Dang. I have a 2.1mA car charger, but wont fit my iPhone 5. Given that there is a chip in the Lightning cable, does this mean that if I bought an adapter, it may or may not work?

Rich, That is the way I have been charging mine in the car. The plug I am
using is a 2 port Griffin Powerjolt that I have had for a long time.
