Do you upgrade as soon as you hear it is out? Apple usually does not push
upgrades the first day it is made available. They wait a day or two to help
spread the demand on the servers.
Besides, it only started showing the badge in iOS 5 when they started to
make OTA, over the air, upgrades available.
Many of the list members are enthusiasts, who tend to be the first adopters.
Could that be why you and Alice did not seen a badge on the Settings icon?
