iOS 5 worked well on my 3GS, also, and was not sluggish. In fact, iOS 6 is not sluggish on the 3GS, but I am having other weird issues, but they apparently have something to do with my set up. I will be scheduling a appointment with the Genius Bar to resolve them.
The reason I was concerned is that the 3GS is the minimum and that is where the issues generally appear. The 3G has considerably less RAM and that is why that one had difficulties early on.
