Leave the SIM card in. After your carrier deactivates it, it is just a
piece of plastic except for one thing. If you ever wipe the phone from the
internal software on the phone, you can't get control of the phone to make
it talk to iTunes unless it has a SIM card in it. This was true but it may
have changed with later iOS. Anyway leaving the SIM in does no harm.
