I understand all that, I have several friends I'm following now. Only
problem is trying to invite my son. He does not receive my request, and I
do not receive his.

You have to send your friend an request to Find My Friends. If they except,
you will be able to see them in the app. If they wish to follow you, they
will have send you and request to let them follow you. You will have to
except for them to follow you.
