I've heard Kim Kommando advertise Carbonite - but I've never tried it. iCloud strikes me as a synchronization tool between the phone and various other Apple devices, and from what I have seen it does that job well.
If you have hundreds of Gb of photographs, videos, and other files like me, the most cost effective method is to by one of those 1T byte or larger external drives, and map it as a network drive. Then dump every new file onto it periodically, or let its own software do it on a schedule. I personally buy two, do the backup once a month and put one in a safe deposit box. Once in a while, I send a trusted relative in another city one of my backup drives. When you have as much data as I do - iCloud is not cost effective. Those external drives are about $60, and they are getting cheaper. I buy maybe one or two a year at most.
