>I'm with AT&T and am unable to call overseas without an international plan. Maybe using Skype but I'd have to be on wifi, correct? It's not like I can just pick up my phone and call my friend in Australia as if I were using a POTS phone.
I have Skype installed (for others), but I don't use it. (I hardly
make any phone call.)
To my knowledge (that may be wrong), one could Skype over 3G as well
as over Wifi.
As I see it, the decisive matter is the service that the caller uses
from his (m/f) provider.
Here at home I have an ADSL cable and 3G reception.
This message goes from my notebook computer ia wifi to my ADSL modem,
and I have no clue what way it will travel to land with each of you
all. (Copper cable, fibre cable, satellite?)
My iPad (iOS 5) is set to prefer wifi to 3G. I don't think that I
could losslessly disconnect my modem while Skyping from my iPad, but I
bet I could reinstate the conversation over 3G within seconds. Vice
versa.
And after all, we all don't need an international plan to get our
messages in this group across the globe, do we? :-)
The nature of the Internet data packages shouldn't matter.
But once a telephone central gets invokes for dialing, then some fee
is due. I think.
Just my two credits... ;-)
