Have you tried the highest rated email app?

It doesn't surprise me that Google would want you to use Chrome even if you have already specified Safari to be your default browser. (May I presume you have done that?)
Disappoints, yes, but doesn't surprise.

When I receive a email with a link to a browser I always get this prompt asking me to choose between Safari & get Google Chrome.

On the bottom of the screen is a slider which i should be able to use to stop having to make the selection each time, but unfortunately it does not stay in the off position!

Any thoughts or tips on this?

This is not a phone number but what the carriers call a short code. I did some searching and found that it is coming from Facebook. Most likely you entered your phone number in your FB information. To stop the messages go to Facebook notification settings and adjust what is sent to your phone.
