I use GPS with Google, Telnav and MapQuest  without any overheating.

You might want to take it to an Apple store to get it replaced.

All iPhones get hot when the GPS receiver is on. Unless you're doing something to stop the air circulation around it, there shouldn't be a problem. Remember, Apple is warranting these for a year (you did get the AppleCare Plus didn't you?) or two with AppleCare. If they were burning out left and right, Apple would be out of business by now.
